Norwalk supplied the union army with goods and soldiers.
My brother worked at Comstock Brothers, making the Kepi, the blue hat worn by northern soldiers. I wanted to fight, so I left Norwalk, and I joined up with the 29th Connecticut Volunteer Colored Regiment. There were a dozen of us from Norwalk, and four of us were in Company C. We mustered in New Haven in November of 1863 before heading to Annapolis.
